Post by Lord gaga on Wed Aug 01, 2012 7:30 am

Well personally i'm a reader and gamer not much of a TV/movie watcher. I'm on a reading frenzy right now and I just finished
The Lost Symbol by Dan brown
and i'm now starting
Wolves of the Calla The dark tower V by Stephen King.

So what are you reading? Cool

I'm reading Elephant Run, by Roland Smith.
It's a phenomenal book, I've read it every year 3 years in a row.

I hate historical fiction <_<
I love historical stuff though! Like stuff from the 60s. A great, great book is "Six Seconds In Dallas". It's about the Kennedy Assassination. I loved it Smile

Historical fiction is amazing. You learn about history whilst reading an interesting story. The only thing fictional are the characters in the book.

I don't know, it just really doesn't appeal that much to me. Perhaps because my teachers made me read really crappy Historical Fiction ._.

Just read recently the new book, 11.22.63 by Stephen King , which is a si-fi book from him which is rather unusual as he really does horror books. Its about going back in time to stop the Kennedy assasination, and see how the USA turns out.

Not want to give anything away, but its not that good a book, and very weak regarding the end plot, so would advise him to go back to horror stories, which he is good at Crying or Very sad

Now lets give you one of the best SI-FI books, by a real si-fi writer, that grips you from start to finish....

Bruce Sterlings first book, INVOLUTION OCEAN, printed in 1977, and its about a human habitation on an alien planet, in a pit carved by an ancient metorite crash, and its 7 miles down and a hundred miles in diameter. The floor of the pit contains an ocean of fine dust and an atmosphere requiring filter mask outside. There are towns and villages on the pit sides, so a boat trade exists to ferry goods and people across the dust ocean.

The story involves the main characters journey in one of these boats in this dust bowl to get a certain drug he craves which can only be got in this ocean, and with a crew of humans and aliens, they have many encounters on a sea of dust, above, on and below the surface.

Very descriptive book, to make you feel you have been there, One of my favorites.

Now reading RINGWORLD's prequel 'Destroyer of worlds' by Larry Niven and Edward M Lerner(a SI-fi story).

This 'predated in time' the amazing and famous RINGWORLD book by Larry Niven (worth reading), which is an artificial construct ring surrounding an alien sun, it is a ribbon of material that is a million miles wide and has a ring diameter that contains the sun inside, so its like massive. The mountain walls on either side are miles high to contain the atmosphere, and the human heros crash land on it after being sent by the puppeteers, an alien race who are always worried about the state of the universe. The heros have to escape this world after many adventures. It would make a great film. (By the way there has been other ringword books like the ringworld engineers, but ringworld is best for awe, vision and grandure).

This prequel 'Destroyer of worlds' I am reading is about the puppeteers and thier flight from the know universe on their fleet of worlds, as the universe is destined to be destroyed, and they want to survive, so they maipulate humans, just like they did in ringword.

Ha ha, its because I love epic si-fi books that give visions of fantastic artificial constructs, artifacts and alien worlds.

One of my favorite books of all time is 'Rendevous with Rama' by the late A C Clark, it was going to be made into a film in 2011, but could not get the money backing, and Morgan Freeman was going to be the star in it. it might still come off though.

Its about a massive alien cylinder, 7 miles long, 2 miles diameter, comming towards Earth and a group of Earthers have to rendevous with it (cylinder is named RAMA), to find out if friend or foe. Its a fantastic epic story.

Have a look at this university students short three minute film, giving an idea how epic a big budget Holywood version would look like....
